Hi Everyone,

Welcome to our Learning Log- 2. Here is the plan for this week discussion-

Imagine you have been called for a job talk of an organization which is similar to Peer Power mission. During the interview process you were given following two reading materials-

1.     Confronting Barriers to Learning to Help All Children Succeed. Link
2.     Also, we will be exploring an organization name “Turnaroundusa”. They are similar in nature what we do in Peer Power.

What I/we will do? Or your task!

Based on the above two readings and your professional experience with Peer Power, you will be coming up with 3/5 recommendations/changes that you want to see in your team/school during Fall 2017.
You are welcome to use case studies and/or any other experience related to your recommendations.

Due date: 10/01/2017 by 11.57PM

Thanks
Hasan

    1. The most general recommendation I would make has to do with the school more than our own organization. I feel the schools would benefit greatly if instead of being told what they need to do in their schools, they were given more opportunities to state what they needed and then have those needs supported by their districts and school systems. The good thing about what we, and organizations like Turn Around USA, do is we get into the schools and dedicate the time and resources to helping uncover and then solve the problems that the individual schools have. And that is done by getting involved personally and for a long period of time.

    2. For us as an organization, I think we would benefit from more support from the College of Education. Being able to bring in more people that are both motivated and trained in education, or other related disciplines, would only serve to make us more effective within the classroom.

    3. And over a longer timeline, it would be great to see our organization develop programs that focus on the issues discussed in the Confronting Barriers article. The idea of support systems in the school system that can target students' behavioral and emotional needs is wonderful but the resources that something like that would require are great. Not only is there an enormous budgetary issue with that level of a program but there is also a large gap in the necessary qualifications and training needed to develop and maintain that program.

    1. Thanks Matt! well explained recommendations. Yes, I think as a organizational point of view PP could take initiative in teachers training in schools. That way our mentoring support in schools might get better result in students achievement.

  2. The main issues that have been a problem in the past have been communication, documentation, and follow-through.

Communication has been an issue, asking people to do things with a one to two day notice was the norm. I believe we have taken steps to resolve that.

As far as documentation goes, the survey monkey and repository ideas are working towards resolving those issues.

Which leads to the final issue of follow-through. We have some ideas in place put they are not fully implemented. The repositories for created lessons and forms, and student interaction documentation, are beginning to take shape, but we need to be diligent in keeping up with both.

As far as the article is concerned, without the psychological services, there isn't much that can be done to help with traumatic experiences.
