I'd wish I could say that these results are surprising, but they aren't. I think the issue with these articles though as it follows the same narrative that we continue to see and that is that the results are only indicative of poor STUDENT performance. There is never a discussion regarding the implementation of the test, or the preparations methods used by the schools. These articles want to give SCS a pat on the back for raising test scores a fraction of a percent but not discuss the problems /issues of even using standardized testing to establish performance.
ReplyDeleteAs for our position, I think the most effective approach to the standardized test we can take is not necessarily to focus on academic content but to help the students understand what the purpose of the testing is and how the scholars should approach this type of academic preparation. Similar to the way in which we do with ACT Prep, where we not only focus on content but also on strategy and perspective. I'm reminded of two springs ago when the entire states testing system crashed and left kids in a panic because the preparations they had made were swiftly made inadequate. It is irresponsible for anyone to look at the outcome of that type of situation and then even attempt to make an evaluation of the results.
