I agree with utilizing social media in the classroom. It'll create a connection from the classroom to home.
ReplyDeleteWe absolutely have to teach email etiquette based on email names I've heard.
Live tweeting in class during discussions or debating with other classes with the use of hash tags would be intriguing as well as helpful.
Yes! Email etiquette is so important. I see this difference among college freshman.

ReplyDeleteHey everyone! This is Whitney. Until recently, I was one of those people who rejected the use of technology in the classroom. I would account my resistance as my way to avoid learning to use technology myself. The major delimma for me was, how could I ever teach students the correct way of using devices that I never was taught how to use myself?
ReplyDeleteYet, once I put my demand for using paper to the side, I then discovered several useful ways to incorporate technology in the classroom. I really like the idea of using social media as a way for students to communicate with each other and proudly display their hard work. In addition, in my opinion, I belive technology use promotes more active student and parent engagement.
Social media is not limited to just facebook, instagram, or snapchat. Sites such as: Pinterest, Fakebook, Edmodo, and YouTube are all social sites that are useful in the classroom. The purpose of using social media in the classroom is centered around the concept of engaging student in authentic learning. Communication and presentation should be a teacher's main focus when using technology. Technology use can be very .useful in the classroom.
Hey Whitney!

Thanks

There are excellent points in this article! The human relationship with technology has evolved significantly. Where we and our parents may see a total divide between the use of social media (technology) and education, our students were born into a society that has technology threaded into every aspect of life. It only makes sense that our classrooms would evolve as well! It is important that we attempt to remain relevant in our teaching style, so that we are effective educators. The key to successful education is relevance and adaptability in the classroom!

DeleteI think utilizing social media is an interesting, current way to connect classes and help bring them into the digital age. It seems like a great way for students, teachers, and parents to ask questions and discuss ideas, as well as stay connected and learn from one another. It could help build a community that may promote interaction and shared learning--from my experience, the more comfortable students are with one another in the classroom, the more likely they are to engage in discussion and ask questions. That heightened level of comfortability helps remove some of the fears associated with answering questions, such as embarrassment from giving an incorrect answer, because it creates a more supportive and relaxed environment.
ReplyDeleteAs we discussed, I think speaking with students about the kind of social media interaction they would like to have would be an important step in implementing it in the classroom. We need to know not only what social media sites they are interested in using, but also how they are willing to use them inside and outside of the classroom. Another important step would be speaking with teachers about how to incentivize students to actually use any sites set up for their work, whether those incentives come from graded assignments, bonus points, or pizza (we all know the power of food!).
Incorporating social media and technology into the classroom seems like it could have a lot of potential benefits for students both during and after school (when they graduate and enter the workforce), but it also seems like it will require careful planning, research, and organization to understand the best way to effectively introduce it into the classroom.

I think utilizing social media in the classroom could prove to be beneficial for both students and teachers. Using social media could provide a new way for students to get involved with their learning and interact in the classroom. I think starting a blog or a video series would promote creativity and focus in students- they may find a new interest outside of things like sports and dance, and doing so would develop social and technological skills that are very needed in today's society. However I do feel this would be more successful with high school students, since they have the tendency to be more social media savvy and active, but starting early with middle schoolers, or even elementary, could give the students an advantage in and outside of the classrooms. Students would have different ways to produce projects or study using social media and other technologies (specifically educational apps).
